Why Uganda

Why Uganda Produces
Premium Fresh Produce

Uganda's equatorial position, mineral-rich, fertile soils, and year-round harvest cycles create growing conditions very few origins on earth can match. For wholesale buyers, this means dependable supply, clean produce, and consistent quality, delivered fresh by air, which is why buyers keep sourcing fresh produce from Uganda.

Hot peppers at source: hand-selected in Mashamba's Ugandan fields.

01

Year-Round Equatorial Sunshine

Stable daylight supports continuous harvests, reliable supply schedules without the seasonal gaps that affect other origins.

02

Rich Mineral Soils

Mineral-dense farmlands near Mt Elgon and the Rwenzori foothills enhance flavour and extend natural shelf life, produce that arrives market-ready.

03

Abundant Fresh Water

Lake Victoria, the Nile basin, and seasonal rains reduce chemical inputs and support the low-residue produce UK and EU buyers require.

04

Naturally Low-Chemical Farming

Smallholder traditions favour low-input, low-chemical practices, supporting the strict MRL expectations of UK and EU buyers without additional processing.

05

Entebbe, East Africa's Export Hub

Entebbe International Airport (EBB), expanded cold-chain facilities, and the direct Uganda Airlines route to London Gatwick (May 2025) mean faster transit and stronger shelf life.

How We Work

Our Six-Step
Export Process

Every shipment follows the same disciplined sequence. Because each stage is managed in-house, nothing is left to a third party between the farm gate and the aircraft.

1

Sourcing

Our agronomists select crops from trusted smallholder farmers across Uganda's growing regions, matched to your specification and volume.

2

Quality Inspection

Trained quality managers grade and inspect every lot at the packhouse. Produce that misses export grade never enters your shipment.

3

Packing

Food-safe, tamper-evident packaging to airline specification. Clear labelling and lot-level traceability on every carton.

4

Documentation

Phytosanitary certificate, commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, and certificate of origin, prepared and shared before departure.

5

Airfreight

Time-bound loading at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) minimises dwell time. Cold-chain-aware handling protects freshness to departure.

6

Delivery

Your shipment arrives documented, compliant, and market-ready. Our team confirms arrival and supports any clearance queries.

"Freshness is won or lost in the hours between harvest and aircraft loading. Our entire process exists to protect those hours."

Our Story

From Uganda's Soil
to Global Shelves

Our export heritage began with Icemark-Africa Ltd, formed in 2000 by Kristján Erlingsson, with export operations running from Entebbe since 2001. FFP (U) Ltd followed in 2006, operating since 2008 under the Mashamba brand, built on one mission: move Uganda's finest agricultural products to the world, fast, certified, and without compromise.

Over two decades we have shipped 23 million+ kg of premium fresh produce, hot peppers, ginger, matoke, sweet potatoes, and more, sourced from hundreds of smallholder farmers and dispatched via priority airfreight from Entebbe to buyers in the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and beyond.

"Proudly Ugandan. Trusted Internationally."

Beyond trade, Mashamba invests in Uganda directly, including sponsoring the Uganda Women's Rugby Team on their historic debut at the Super Seven Rugby Series.

Logistics

Airfreight Beats Sea Freight for Fresh Produce

Perishables lose shelf life every hour after harvest. Mashamba shipments are typically airborne from Entebbe within two days of harvest and at your destination airport within four, the difference between premium pricing and markdown stock. Cold chain management begins at harvest, not during transportation.

Compliance

Five Documents Travel with Every Shipment

A compliant shipment from Uganda carries a phytosanitary certificate, commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, and certificate of origin. Missing paperwork is the most common cause of border delays, which is why ours is prepared and shared before departure.

Questions
Buyers Ask

Everything wholesale buyers in the UK, EU, and Gulf need to know before placing their first order.

Contact Export Team
How does Mashamba prepare Ugandan fresh produce for international airfreight?
We operate an airfreight-only model via Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Produce is graded, packed in food-safe materials, and labelled to airline specifications. Final quality checks are completed before airport handover to minimise dwell time and protect freshness.
How is quality control maintained from Ugandan farm to airport?
Quality managers supervise sorting and packing with lot-level tracking from farm gate to packhouse. We use controlled environments, tamper-evident packaging, and certified staff. Temperature-aware handling and time-bound loading maintain shelf life until cargo acceptance at EBB.
What order volumes and lead times can Ugandan produce buyers expect?
We supply flexible volumes, from a trial shipment through to regular bulk supply of a single crop. Lead times depend on crop, seasonality, and flight availability. Once confirmed, our team aligns product readiness with a departure window and provides a firm schedule with all documentation milestones.
Can I order a trial shipment of Ugandan produce before committing to volume?
Yes. Many of our long-term buyers started with a trial shipment. A smaller first shipment lets you verify quality, packaging, and documentation against your own standards before scaling volumes. Our team treats trial shipments with the same priority as full loads.
Which countries does Mashamba export Ugandan fresh produce to?
Primary markets: UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Norway, and Italy in Europe, and Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar in the Gulf. We serve 9 countries, all exports departing via Entebbe International Airport (EBB).
What export documents, including the phytosanitary certificate, come with each shipment?
Every shipment includes a commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill (AWB), phytosanitary certificate, and certificate of origin. Where a destination requires additional documents, we coordinate them to your specification before departure.
How does airfreight keep Ugandan fresh produce fresh in transit?
Freshness is protected by speed and handling discipline. We harvest to order, pack in temperature-aware conditions, and load within tight windows at Entebbe. Direct airfreight routes, including the three-times-weekly Uganda Airlines service to London Gatwick, keep total transit time short.
Is Ugandan fresh produce available for export year-round?
Yes. Uganda's equatorial climate supports continuous harvest cycles, so all 9 of our export crops are available throughout the year. Volumes for specific grades can vary by season, which our team confirms during quotation.
What payment terms does Mashamba offer international produce buyers?
Payment terms are agreed during the quotation stage and confirmed in writing before dispatch. Our team walks you through the options when you request a quote, and trial orders keep first commitments manageable.
Does Mashamba provide documents in time for UK IPAFFS pre-notification?
Yes. UK importers must pre-notify consignments through IPAFFS at least four working hours before airfreight lands. Because we prepare and share full export documentation before departure from Entebbe, your team has everything needed to pre-notify well within that window.
Does Mashamba's Ugandan produce meet GLOBALG.A.P. and HACCP standards?
Our growers work to GLOBALG.A.P. standards at farm level, and our packhouse runs a HACCP-based food-safety system. FFP (U) Ltd is listed on Uganda's MAAIF register of horticultural-products exporters, and every shipment leaves with a phytosanitary certificate and full export documentation.
What makes Mashamba a trusted Ugandan fresh produce exporter?
Mashamba has airfreighted fresh Ugandan produce since 2001, managing every stage in-house: smallholder sourcing, packhouse quality control, export documentation and airfreight dispatch from Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Buyers deal directly with the exporter for reliable supply to the UK, EU and Gulf.
